The first notable development in ultra lightweight handguns came, of course, during World War II when both Smith & Wesson and Colt introduced the Air Crewman series, highly prized collectors items. The Smith & Wesson Model 12, a lightweight medium frame, even survived into the 1970s as a production item. When the Gun Market first turned its attention to titanium in the 1990s, we knew that large caliber Airweights were a possibility, but we thought their pricing would be prohibitive. It turned out not to be, and Smith & Wesson has successfully marketed Air Lite series revolvers for the past decade. Note that most of their revolvers are black. There's a reason for that, as our photographer can testify. The frame metal is incredibly strong but microscopically porous, and that makes cleaning the metal surfaces very difficult. To address that problem, Smith & Wesson has a special process not unlike the 1980s Electroless Nickel. This variant, then, of the .357 Air Lite, is all white. Frame and shroud are composed of Titanium and Scandium alloys. Even though there are three or four discreet hues to this 150648 variant's coloration, it is retains the classic Smith & Wesson look and durability. Barrel, cylinder, thumb latch and screws are stainless steel, with case colored MIM .375 semi-target hammer and .312 smooth combat trigger. Sights are matte black notch blade adjustable rear and High Visibility Fiber Optic front. Frame is L size round butt with lanyard groove, and grips are Factory Hogue Bantam combat type. Capacity is 6 rounds of .38 Special or .357 Magnum ammunition. Barrel is 3 1/8 inches long. The main attraction, however, is the weight, only 24.5 ounces in a full service size revolver.
