Here is an old ranch gun, originally shipped to John M. Smyth and Company, Chicago, Illinois, on March 24, 1911, with one other gun. It shows use, but is in good working order with sharp edges and clear markings. The barrel is marked “41” on the breech bottom, as both .38 WCF and .41 Long Colt took the same bore. This bore is bright with only moderate shallow pitting – quite shootable. It is mechanically sound and locks up tight. It is a .38 WCF (.38-40) with old stag grips and a vintage Mexican style double loop custom (no maker mark), lined holster carved in a basket weave design with borders. It is overall gun metal gray with only slight original finish in protected areas. It doesn’t show the wear of the everyday cowboy, but the high quality lined holster, well fit stag grips and good maintenance would favor a rancher.
