Its AFB serial number prefix dates this thoroughly traditional .38 Military and Police Stainless, the Model 64, third engineering change, to President Reagan's Re-election Year, 1984. This one is in Very Good condition finishwise and Excellent Mechanically. Metal surfaces exhibit moderate holster buffing, scouring and streaking. Side plate screw shows stress where the revolver was serviced every year by factory trained armorers. Matte finish atop frame and barrel is strong with light holster buffing. Detractions are mostly confined to streaks and scours in the strap area on the right side plate and on the trigger guard area. There is light holster buffing here and there, but the original classic streaked-stainless Smith & Wesson finish is strong throughout. Pachmayr SK-GP grips are Excellent and decade-appropriate for this period revolver. We rate this 64 as Very Good finishwise, around 85 percent. Photos, however, should suffice for interested parties to judge finish grade for themselves. Note the classic, highly desirable satin stainless hammer and trigger, and their excellent condition. This 64-5 is excellent mechanically. Double action trigger pull is smooth and consistent, and the hammer travels full 15 degrees after the cylinder times into place in all six positions. On single action, the hammer travels a full 25 to 30 degrees after the cylinder times in all six positions; and the single action trigger pull is a crisp 3 7/8 pounds. Lateral play to the cylinder is minimal, both with the trigger relaxed and with it pulled. Blast effect to the under side of the frame top strap directly above the barrel's forcing cone is negligible, only carbon residue and that area has no different appearance from the milling marks on its adjacent surfaces. This revolver has had few if any +P rounds fired in it. Cylinder face to forcing cone gap is a perfect .007. Bore and Cylinder Chambers are bright, clean, and excellent. This 20 year old service revolver has been well maintained and sparingly used during its career, and it is eminently serviceable for civilian or security use.
