I’m 29 years old and was in the Army for 5 years and 6 months, as an Infantryman. On my second deployment, I was injured in Baghdad, Iraq on Nov 13, 2006. My humvee was hit with an amour pricing IED, and I lost both his legs above the knee and as serious injuries to his right hand and minor injuries to his left hand. He also lost three of his comrades. He was an inpatient at Walter Reed Medical Center for three months, then spent almost two years in physical therapy in San Diego. I will be able to walk independently again eventually, but because of bilateral above-knee amputee, walking on his prosthetics will require a lot of exertion, so he also uses a wheelchair for the time being. While in the Army he received several awards including two purple hearts, a bronze star, two Arcoms with Valor, and the Army Achievement Medal.
