Originally an Enfield, British design for their Pattern 1914 rifle, contracted to be made by Winchester and Remington in Ilion, NY and Remington in Eddystone plant in Pa. Since the US was far short of battle rifles when they were ready to enter WWI, they took over the British contract and had the arms factories retool the receiver to fire the US 30-06 round, in place of the British 303 caliber round. This produced a great, strong battle rifle and many more were carried into WWI by American troops than was the US Model 1903 Rifle. The famous Medal of Honor recipient, Sgt.
