Only 1,368 Krags marked 1895 were produced before they were marked Model 1896. Page 50…In actual fact, the pressure to provide carbines for mounted troops was so intense that production of the new carbine actually began in late 1895, probably in mid-November or very early December. These are the carbines with “1895” marked receivers. Those made in January and early February of 1896 were marked “1896” on the receiver, without the word “Model” in both cases. With the information in Poyer’s book the parts are correct and the parts that are considered replacement parts are detailed below. The Subject Carbine has a Type 4C stock On page 57 of Poyer’s book it is noted that The Type 4C stock was used to restock serviceable Model 1896 carbines. The Subject Carbine has a Type 2 Model 1901 Carbine Sight with the appropriate type 7 handguard. The slide and sight leaf are from a rifle sight. While it would be nice if it were a complete Carbine sight there are two notes in Poyer’s book for how this likely occurred. On page 167 Poyer makes a note that says Model 1901 rear sights were extensively rebuilt and are often found with mixed parts and on page 169 he states…Many Model 1901 rear sights appear to have a mix of various Model 1901 part types and says this situation probably developed because of repairs made in the field. The subject carbine is in perfect mechanical condition with a very good shiny bore. This is a rare Krag and would be a fantastic addition to any collection. THERE IS NO SALES TAX IN NH!!!
