Construction is steel barrel, magazine tube, bolt, internal parts, and trigger, fitted in a light weight alloy frame. Barrel is 24 inch fully rifled bore, six groove 1:36 right hand twist. Barrel has 8 ports on both sides behind the front sight at 2 and 10 o’clock for muzzle rise reduction. Chambering is 20 gauge, 2 3/4 inch and 3 inch interchangeably. The bore is designed for rifled slugs; fully rifled bores tend to yield poor patterns with standard shot and buckshot. Sight system factory Williams welded steel blade front, with windage and elevation adjustable alloy rear. Magazine holds 5 each 2 3/4 inch shells, or 4 each 3 inch shells, so 5+1 capacity on 2 3/4 inch. Alloy receiver is drilled at four points for a number 80 Weaver base, or identically spaced Picatinny rail. Safety is classic Mossberg tang mounted, southpaw friendly on its own, but the 3/4 inch right hand cant of the buttstock conspires against left hand shooters. Length of pull is 14 inches from the smooth face of the Gold Plated .300 steel trigger to the end of the factory 7/8 inch recoil pad. Weight empty is 6 pounds 10 ounces, with center of gravity 1/2 inch forward of the receiver. Stock and forend are satin finished, cut checkered American Hardwood. Metal finish is polished blue steel, gloss black anodized alloy receiver, and white bolt. This 500 comes to us from light duty with Mossberg’s reps and writers. The letter U is stamped beside its serial number. Surface detractions are minimal, principally forend operation whitening on the slide arms, really no more than shelf wear one sees on display guns across the country.
