From its home here in West Tennessee comes this solid and attractive J. Stevens double barreled shotgun. Manufacturer was Savage Arms Corporation of Chicopee Falls, Mass., and so marked on the left side receiver. Model is Stevens model 311. Type is box lock side by side double shotgun with single block extractor. From the M Y date code on the receiver table, it was manufactured in 1961. Construction is entirely steel metal, with American Walnut Buttstock and Forend. Trigger guard is home made replacement, but well executed. Chambering is 16 gauge shells, lead shot only. Barrels are 26 inch .664 improved cylinder right tube and .644 improved modified choke left tube. Mechanism is breech lever lockup, with flush milled barrel pin. Safety is serrated tang mounted behind the lever. Buttstock length of pull is 14 1/4 inches from the right trigger face to the end of the butt plate. Weight empty is 6 pounds 15 ounces, with center of gravity at the forend-receiver junction. Overall length is 42 1/2 inches. Surface detractions are moderate, principally scouring on the under side of the buttstock’s pistol grip area and under side of the forend. Wear is even throughout, with an estimated 75% of the barrel bluing intact. Case color finish is still visible at the back edges of the receiver. We rate this Double as Good, perhaps Very Good, 70 to 75 percent vicinity by our estimate. Photos, at any rate, ought to suffice for our distinguished shoppers to judge for themselves. Bore, chamber, and mechanism are all bright and clean. There are no cracks in the wood, and no dimples in the barrel.
