Star, Bonifacio Echeverria S.A. of Eibar, Spain quickly caught the attention of Europe, the Middle East, and even the United States with their excellent quality pistols that went into production in 1934. Israeli Defense Forces had this one’s ancestor, the Star Model B, as one of their sidearms during the War for Independence in 1948. Star led the way with compact versions of 1911 descendants, with their BM Compact in the early 1970s. This Star M43 Firestar, marketed in the heyday of two fine companies, Star and Interarms, embodied single action simplicity, small size, rugged construction, and formidable firepower. It even caught the attention of the distinguished officers of the Mishteret Y’Israel, the Israeli Civilian Police in Jerusalem District, a 20,000 strong agency in the most historic city on earth. That is where this Firestar Plus spent its law enforcement career, in the Land of Israel. English language Star factory markings appear on both sides of the blue steel slide. PW Arms Redmond Wa, import stamp on the frame’s right side as required by Federal Law. Its H 2 date code indicates it was manufactured in 1988, late in the First Intifada, and it served through the Second Intifada as well. As far as specs, type is Single Action semi-auto. The Star’s ambidextrous safety is distinctive in that it will engage both with the hammer down, and also with the hammer back for cocked-and-locked carry. Overall length is 6 1/4 inches from the muzzle to the rear of the grip frame strut. Height is only 4 1/2 inches from the top of the rear sight to the bottom of an in-battery magazine. Maximum frame thickness is only 0.957 inches. Magazine is extended factory issue 9 round steel, 9 + 1 rounds capacity of 9mm Luger, 9mm Parabellum, 9x19, call it what you will, THE 9mm ammunition. Trigger is .272 smooth face service size with matching round serrated Commander style hammer. Construction is steel frame with steel slide and parts, and bell-nosed blue and white steel 3 1/4 inch Detonics type barrel with flared muzzle and three mating cams for positive lockup and superior accuracy. Conventional six-groove right hand rifling and polished ramp chamber area will admit any kind of ammo, from steel case Russian to lead nose reloads to Federal Premium Hydra-Shok Hollowpoints. Guide rod is full length steel with removable spring. Weight empty is a light 30.2 ounces with the center of gravity underneath the trigger guard recess. Sights are dovetailed low profile bar ramp front with plunger-retained dovetailed square notch serrated side combat rear. Note that the Magazine release is ambidextrous just as the safety levers are. Finish is what Star and Interarms called Starvel, a hard nickel finish with satin coloration on the frame and upper slide, with brushed finish texture on the frame and slide side flats. Surface detractions are moderate, principally scouring and peeling to the high edges on the left side of slide and frame, along the left edges, on the bottom of the butt area left side, and on the left slide serrations. Right side is less affected; otherwise, there are faint amounts of dark toning, scouring and holster buffing on the satin finished surfaces. Note that the grip panels have some extensive wear, small area through to the plate, on both sides’ forward butt area. We rate this Firestar Plus as Good, perhaps Very Good, 70 percent vicinity by our estimate. Photos, at any rate, ought to suffice for our distinguished shoppers to judge finish grade for themselves. This pistol is excellent mechanically; bore, chamber, and mechanism are all bright, clean, and excellent.
