This isn't a copy; it's an original Mauser. It is surplus all right, but not nearly so much so as 30 years ago, hence our listing under Surplus & Copies here on Guns America. From Russian ordnance houses where it has been carefully stored and re-stored now for 65 years comes this German Military 98 Mauser in 8x57 Mauser caliber in its original Laminated Military Stock, just like it was issued to the German Army in 1938. Manufacturer code 147 is above the chamber ring, J.P. Sauer & Sohn, Suhl, with the date beneath. Serial number is 2000 range. Waffenamt proofs appear on the right side of the chamber area receiver; and what appears to be East German reproofs on the left side of that area. Those may very well be Sauer’s own company proofs. There has been some remarking at two places on the bolt surface and once on the floorplate. Bolt as well was scribed with the matching receiver number by the Victorious Russian Armorers, and the bluing has been arsenal refinished with some dimming to its letters on top of the receiver’s chamber area. Forward area of the receiver shows purplish coloration and mill marking on the barrel ring of the receiver. Note that the bolt itself is earlier type straight handle, not curved; the Russian Armorers installed it this way after the War Ended. Bore, chamber, and mechanism are Very Good to excellent. We detect no visible pitting in the bore; just roughness in the grooves at places. Note the armorer splicing to the wood on the lower corner buttplate area; otherwise, scouring to the stock finish is only moderate; otherwise this rifle will rate as Very Good / Refinish in our estimation. Photos, at any rate, should suffice for our distinguished shoppers to judge finish grade for themselves. Note that importer’s marks, are on the left side of the barrel next to the rear sight, R-Guns, C’ville, Il.
