Introduced in 1957, the Remington 552A eventually completely displaced the expensive-to-produce model 550 and 550-1. The BDL variant of this model is still in production today, the last man standing among rimfire autoloaders that handle all three types of .22 Rimfire standard ammunition, the Short, the Long, and the Long Rifle. During the 1960s, facing stiff competition from the rough and tough Ruger 10/22, Remington went to hardwood stock and forend on the ADL variant of the 552, and eventually phased the ADL out altogether as plastic technology permitted production of the Nylon series, and then the Viper and 597 type rifles. Quality is, of course, vastly inferior on the 597 types. Not so with this one, an original classic 552 ADL with LC date code, manufactured in February of 1982, President Reagan's second year in office. This is a very attractive, eminently serviceable specimen of the later ADLs, and it has the all-steel 788 type adjustable rear sight with classic aluminum-bead blade front sight. Barrel length is 22 inches, actually 21 1/2, and mechanism is tube fed semi auto. Receiver is lightweight anodized aluminum alloy. Surface detractions on this ADL are only moderate, occasional scouring on the buttstock and forend, with moderate weathering near the buttplate. Metal has very strong original finish with faint to moderate white streaking on its sharp edges, mostly confined to the receiver. We rate it as Very Good, close to Excellent, finishwise, since we estimate that 85 percent of its surface is not affected by any kind of contact evidence. Bore, chamber, and mechanism are all bright, clean, and excellent. Replacement price on the nearest available model, the 552 BDL, is $600 or more in our area.
