From a collection in Kentucky comes this distinctive, attractive Fabrique Nationale action Commercial 98 Mauser Rifle with matching, FIC Stamped 22 inch barrel, chambered in .30-06 Springfield Caliber. The turned-down bolt handle is FN Proofed on its upper flat, meaning that this configuration is how the action left Herstal Belgium some time, by our estimate, around 1950 from its S1400 range serial number. Receiver is drilled for a side mounted aperture sight to match the raised bead type front sight; but instead it sports a very early Monoscope 2.5x10, 38mm Objective variable marked Japan and with old style small adjustment covers. Crosshairs are 1950s correct FCH style, and mounts are early steel top two-screw Weavers. Buttstock looks to us like a very early Bishop specimen, note the hand cut checkering, the stud capable dark mahogany forend cap and matching red inlaid grip cap. Length of pull is a rather long 15 1/8 inches, from the face of the serrated blue steel trigger to the end of the brown rubber butt pad. Pad is marked Supreme / Glendale, CA, probably proto-Pachmayr. Floorplate is military style blue steel, no swivel, just pop-off. Trigger gauges at a very heavy 8 pounds, but it ht least has not been tinkered with. Surface detractions are minimal to moderate, only faint occasional freckling on the metal, but note the toning on the sides of the front sight, with a small amount of adjacent streaking. We rate this FN Mauser as Very Good, close to Excellent, 85 to 90 percent vicinity by our estimate; but photos ought to suffice for our distinguished shoppers to judge finish grade for themselves. It is Excellent mechanically. Bore, chamber, and mechanism are all bright, clean, and excellent.
