Here is a serviceable, still-attractive specimen of the classic Browning .22 auto. It is thoroughly traditional, thoroughly FN Belgian manufacture. From its T71 serial number suffix, it was manufactured in 1971, and FN production ceased in 1974. This is John M. Browning's invention from 1914, and its lines are the same as the original. Buttstock and forend are cut-checkered American Walnut, and metal is engraved receiver blue steel with 19 1/4 inch barrel. Chambering is .22 Long Rifle, 12 + 1 rounds capacity, tube fed semi-auto. The tube, of course, inserts through the rifle's buttstock. Few autoloading rimfire rifles, writes the factory, have endured the test of time and the marketplace like the Browning SA-22. That is what Browning calls it; we’ve always called it the Grade I Take Down. We sold this little Browning new, and it has stayed with the same family here in Chester County since then. Surface detractions are moderate, principally carry scouring at places on the buttstock, as the photos show. Bluing is strong throughout, with only a few freckles on the barrel surface. We rate this Grade I Take Down as Very Good, 75 to 80 percent vicinity. It is excellent mechanically; bore, chamber, and mechanism are all bright, clean, and excellent.
