From its K156000 serial number range, we estimate that this Mossberg 20 gauge model 500-C was manufactured in the early 1990s. This is, of course, one of the most under-appreciated shotguns there are. The Mossberg 500 series shotguns have been paying their dues of durability now for over 50 years, and they rival the ruggedness of their 870 competitors with less weight and considerably less money. Mossberg 500 receivers, of course, have long been lightweight but durable alloy, and their working parts, barrel, and magazine tube constructed of blue steel. Trigger group on this one, like most of its mates, is high impact polymer and houses a steel trigger. The classic Mossberg top Tang Safety is user friendly even for southpaw shooters, and the semi-gloss dark stained, cut-checkered hardwood stocks are attractive and even weather resistant. This is what Mossberg calls its crown grade, best looking finish on its 500 series. Barrel is 26 inches with serrated Ventilated Rib and brass bead front sight. It is chambered for 2 3/4 inch and 3 inch Magnum shells interchangeably, and the choke tube is the original modified Mossberg Accu-Choke, same thread as standard 20 gauge Browning Invector or Winchester Win-Choke. Magazine capacity is 5 + 1 on 2 3/4 inch loads, and 4 + 1 on 3 inch, and Mossbergs are the easiest of all slide action shotguns to equip with or remove the 2+1 adapter if a person wants to hunt doves, ducks, or crows; that is, any federally classified migratory bird. Length of pull is a dead 14 inches between the smooth faced steel trigger and end of the 1 inch traditional brown recoil pad on the end of the buttstock, and overall length is a well balanced 45 1/2 inches. This 500-C comes to us from its exclusive local owner, and it is very well preserved. Surface detractions are only minimal, light occasional scouring to the metal and wood, and we estimate that less than 15 percent of its total surface is affected, so we classify it as a strong Very Good, close to Excellent, condition specimen. Photos ought to suffice, at any rate, for prospective owners to judge finish grade for themselves. It is excellent mechanically; bore, chamber, and mechanism are all bright, clean, and excellent; and from its condition we estimate this shotgun has been fired fewer than 500 times, no shooting at all for a Mossberg 500.
