Here is a serviceable specimen of the Chinese type 56 infantry rifle chambered in 7.62x39 caliber, that we call the SKS. Manufacturer was Jianshe Arsenal in the People’s Republic of China, on Russian milling equipment and under Russian supervision. From its very early 7 digit 064000 range serial number, it was manufactured in 1957, when the French withdrew from South Vietnam and President Diem asked for U.S. Military Advisers to fill the vacuum. This specimen is Not import marked. It comes to us from a Levy County, Florida US Marine Captain’s Estate. It was never import marked, and it has been in country for the past four decades, but we were not able to get its papers. Its owner served in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam, and was, his surviving family tells us, awarded five purple hearts. He is buried in Alachua County. The only documentation we have are emails from a family member. Type, of course, is gas operated semi-automatic rifle. Construction is milled blue steel barrel, receiver and parts; and Asian Hardwood stock. Barrel is standard 20 inch, calibrated military rear sight and elevation adjustable front sight, with drift capability for windage – on the well hooded front sight. We do not have its bayonet. Surface detractions are extensive on this specimen. Metal exterior is mainly an etchy blue-brown patina. Buttstock has moderate scouring and dinging, but no outright cracks. Trigger group, magazine, receiver cover, stock cartouches and receiver serial numbers are all matching. Only the bolt is a mismatch, but same year of production. We rate this type 56 as Good, brown patina. Photos, at any rate, ought to suffice for our shoppers to judge finish grade for themselves. Bore and chamber do not show any pitting, and rifling is sharp and clean. We see a faint ring about an inch inside the muzzle, but do not see any external swelling to the barrel at that point. This is a well made, historic and collectable specimen that popped caps at our soldiers in Vietnam. We’re offering it for only $ 589.00.
