Winchester Model 21 TRAP/SKEET 16 GAUGE, GORGEOUS WOOD!
Most double gun enthusiasts are well aware of the reputation earned by the Winchester Model 21; a gun of far superior strength and mechanical genius that was under the micro management of John Olin himself. With only 32,000 produced (compared to 250,000 Parkers!), any high condition, original Model 21 is a valuable, investment quality firearm sure to appreciate as you enjoy its use. The Trap/Skeet Grade was only produced for about 5 years, so it is scarce as a Grade. If you consider the fact that they made 5 times more 12 gauge guns than 16 gauge guns, and almost 3 times as many 20 gauge guns than 16's, then a Trap/Skeet Grade in 16 gauge becomes a very hard to find Model 21. From 1930 to 1943 they only made 1034 16 gauge guns in all grades, most of them Standard Grades or Skeet Grades. This gun, sn6437 made prior to 1940, is in near new condition and has fantastic wood and original metal finishes. In fact this exact gun is pictured in the definitive book on Model 21's "Winchester's Finest; THE MODEL 21" by Ned Schwing on page 105. The Trap Grade was said to have special attention to boring, chokes, and finish with highly figured wood, and checkered side panels. The "Trap/Skeet" was a skeet choked Trap Grade. What a find in this gun as a 16 bore!
The 26" barrels retain over 99% blue, choked WS1/WS2 and so marked, mirror bores with internal bore diameter of .670 both barrels, minimum wall thickness of 29 thou both barrels, 2 3/4" chambers, and crisp clear lettering on the left barrel. As you can see by the consistency of the right and left barrel, Winchester really did attempt to make the Trap Grade a very special shooting gun. It is rare I find both barrels precisely the same. There are no dings, dents, or scratches and the ribs are tight, silver mid bead, red front sight, barrels tight on breech face and hinge like a new gun, a great set of barrels.
The action retains 99% factory blue, excellent screws, crisp single selective trigger, strong well timed ejectors, trigger guard at 90% blue, non-automatic safety, mechanically excellent.
The straight hand stock is highly figured feather crotch, delightfully marbled with sharp factory checkering, looks like some finish nicely applied over the original some time ago, no cracks or repairs, beavertail forend in excellent shape, 14" LOP to a checkered butt, 2" drop at heel, 1 1/2" drop at comb, neutral cast, excellent wood to metal fit, A KNOCKOUT LOOKING MODEL 21. The stock can easily be bent to your specs within 10 days of purchase for about $180.
The gun weighs in at 6lbs. 14oz. and is delightful in hand. The balance is just perfect. It is rare to ever find a 16 gauge Trap/Skeet, especially one that is in Schwing's book and in near new condition. Chokes WS1/WS2 it is ideal for grouse, woodcock, quail, or any birds over pointing breeds and a dynamite skeet and clays gun as well. Priced to sell, don't let this one get by you!
