Here is an excellent representative of the never-plentiful Smith & Wesson Model 49 Bodyguard variant of the J frame revolver line. Its serial number is J5698xx, manufactured in President Carter’s inaugural year of 1977. It has light carry contact whitening on the edges of its muzzle, on the forward edges of the cylinder face and flutes, and on the upper rear edges of the frame. Cylinder surface has light rotation marking, and some whitening and light spotting here and there.Grip panels are original, and their glossy finish has given way to a nice plain oil finish to the walnut. We rate this revolver as a strong Very Good, since 85 percent or so of its finish remains by our estimate. Photos, however, should suffice for interested parties to judge finish grade for themselves. Visible areas of the hammer and trigger show near full strength color casehardening, and the side plate screws show no stress at all. This little steel Bodyguard is Excellent Mechanically. Blast effect to the under side of the frame top strap directly above the forcing cone is minimal, very light creasing that only traverses about 1/3 of the top strap. We doubt this revolver was ever fired 200 times in its life. Cylinder times well in both single and double action on all five positions. Own this fine 1977 Steel Bodyguard for only $ 419.95
