This is a very good condition Colt Single Action Army revolver delivered to the United States Government July 3, 1890, at the Colt plant, Hartford, Connecticut. Both a Colt Archives letter and a John Kopec letter accompany this Colt, as well as a Columbia Precision note regarding the replaced trigger and mechanical condition.
For valuation purposes, we have rated this Colt at 70% original finish. Blue on the barrel, ejector rod casing, trigger guard and backstrap is quite good. The cylinder obviously shows scratches and a sever drag line, but strong blue overall with even better in the protected cylinder flutes. Case colors are visible throughout the frame and hammer, very strong in protected areas. The bore is strong and bright. The grips, as noted by Kopec, are later replacements, but are a reasonable fit and have proper markings. According to the Blue Book (38th Edition), this serial number Colt (133879) falls into “Late U.S. Model SAA, Serial Range 131,187 – 140,361 (Mfg. 1890 – 1891). It is valued in 70% condition at $21,000.00. The replaced grips affect that value.
Kopec speculates that this was probably a militia issued revolver, going out to one of the states, returning to the National Armory and placed in reserve, then sold as surplus starting in 1912 and running into the 1920’s. He also mentions that many of the Colts in this serial number range were Artillery models, with a 5.5” barrel. That makes this one rare to survive in the Cavalry (7.5” barrel) configuration. This gun is an antique, so it needs no FFL for shipment.
