After the rampant inflation of the 1970s, when GI .45's and Colts shot up from $100 apiece to the $400 - $500 range, several companies threw their 1911 hats into the ring for an economical alternative to the too-pricey-by-then Colt types. Auto Ordnance and Olympic Arms came on with decent clones, but their products were all 'way too rough in terms of feed, fit, and function. Enter Springfield Armory in 1985 with a reliable and accurate out-of-the-box 1911 for about half what the Colts were selling for, and consistent excellence in construction and performance against the other rough-shod clones. Those 1980s pistols were made in Geneseo, Illinois and they command premium prices. This Springfield Armory Imbel Brazil GI 1911 continues that tradition, with faithful replication of the best elements of World War II armory finish. All of Springfield Armory's G.I. Models, the company explains, are built with a forged frame, slide and barrel and include low profile military sights, standard magazine well and spur hammer, standard ejection port, arched mainspring housing with lanyard loop, vertical slide serrations and titanium firing pin. Package includes one magazine, belt holster and cable lock. Other specs are Single Action Only pistol, caliber .45 ACP, 5 inch barrel, 7 + 1 Magazine included, total of one magazine only; Thumb Safety, Grip Safety, firing pin block safety, and internal mainspring lock with two keys; Double Diamond Brazilian hardwood grips US marked and authentic US GI brown plastic grips; low profile military sights; weight 39 ounces empty. Finish is weather-and-wear-resistant US GI Parkerized. This specimen is in Excellent Condition in its original box with all its papers. Its only detractions are faint stress marking to the right grip screws and faint slide contact to the barrel surfaces. It comes to us from its exclusive retail owner, a Madison County, Tennessee farmer who indeed sold it to us to buy fertilizer.
