We are offering a very scarce JOSH GOLCHER black powder percussion rifle chambered in what appears to be a very large .54 caliber. This is a very old Kentucky style rifle dating to the mid 1800’s.
28” half octagon barrel is good to very good with a good muzzle. It is marker with what appears to be “ “…Maker B. Hyslon & Son Warrented”. Smooth bore appears very good with wear consistent with age and use. Pewter nose cap. Ramrod guide has apparently been removed at some point. There is also a rear sight notch that has been filled and mortised. Ramrod appears to be a replacement.
Sideplate is marked “Josh Golcher” and features nice engravings. There is some pitting present. Hammer is also engraved and in working order. Cocking action works smoothly and holds. Stock is in fair condition and has been repaired at some point long ago on left side, opposite of sideplate. Crack shows on rear tang and underneath near the trigger. There is also a hole that goes through the foreend. Single trigger. Trigger guard and butt plate are brass.
Overall, this is a very scarce example of an early musket!
