Beautiful vintage 1894 Sporting Rifle in the desirable 38-55 WCF caliber. Made during WW1 in 1917 it has the 26 inch octagon barrel with an excellent bore. The bore is bright with sharp rifling, no trace of pitting or frosting, I rate it near perfect 9.8 on a 1 to 10 scale and will be a fine shooter with cast or jacketed bullets. I haven't test fired yet but will do so this weekend. The barrel and magazine retain 75+% blue with sharp edge wear and carry wear just forward of the receiver. The rear sight is a Winchester #24A with 1B elevator. The front sight is a period Lyman 1/16" gold bead that gives an excellent sight picture. The receiver has full coverage of nice even plum gray patina. It is mechanically excellent, feeds, chambers and ejects smoothly. The bolt has that fine "smooth as glass" operation characteristic of the early Winchesters when the internal parts were hand finished. Lockup is tight and solid with no excess play in the lever. Both half cock and full cock hold properly with crisp trigger break. The buttstock and forearm are in excellent condition, tight and solid with no cracks, chips or significant dents. The initials "F.C" are lightly carved in the left side of the forearm, not deep and could easily be removed. I'm sure a coat of varnish has been added some time in the past but the wood hasn't been sanded and stands proud above all mating metal surfaces from the nose cap to the cresent buttplate. This is a fine, vintage Winchester in the best timber caliber you can find, the venerable 38-55 - and really hard to find in this condition. If you are not 100% delighted return for a full refund!
