HG8225The M&P22, writes Smith & Wesson, is sure to be a popular addition to the M&P line of semi-auto pistols. Designed as a dedicated .22LR, the M&P22 pistol combines the look, feel and familiar operating features of the trusted M&P series of centerfire pistols. The M&P22 is ideally suited for training or simple shooting enjoyment with the popular and inexpensive .22LR cartridge. Our take on it is one word: a Trainer. The MP22 has the same dimensions as its centerfire siblings, only with 24 ounce empty weight over against 35 ounce vicinity on the centerfires. Safety, unlike many centerfire M&Ps, is ambidextrous lever type, and the back strap or mainspring housing area is not convertible like the big guns. Mechanism is not exactly the same, either; the MP22 has an internal hammer whereas the 9s, .40s, and .45s are striker fired. Sights are 3 dot configuration, and the rear sight is click adjustable for elevation, but windage adjustable by drift only. Manufacturer is Carl Walther Gmbh of Germany. Construction is polymer frame, with pot metal slide and polymer safety lever. Only the 4.1 inch barrel’s sleeve and a few of the internal parts, and the slide release, are steel. Magazine is P22 type stainless body with steel springs and thumb piece; and polymer floorplate and cartridge follower. Magazine holds 10 rounds of .22 Long Rifle Caliber ammunition. P-22 type wrench and two allen screw wrenches are included for maintenance and sight adjustment. Magazine release can easily be converted for left handed shooters, just like the big guns. This is a quality piece, but in the class of the P22 Walthers, not capable of being converted to centerfire. It was never out of Smith & Wesson corporate custody until we got it. It is in its original box with 2011 dated fired brass envelope, instruction manual, never executed factory registration card, and wrench kit. This is probably one of Smith & Wesson’s showgirls that was on display at the 2012 SHOT show, or similar sales outing. Surface detractions are negligible, as the photos show, only faint slide contact to the barrel surface and faint occasional edge whitening. We rate it as Near Mint in Box, but photos ought to suffice for our distinguished shoppers to judge finish grade for themselves. It is excellent mechanically; bore, chamber, and mechanism are all bright, clean, and excellent. If this pistol has been fired since 2011, it was fewer than 50 times. Its center fire siblings are commanding prices upwards of $700 apiece in our area, and they are scarce even at that. This .22 gets much better gas mileage, and the .22 Long Rifle cartridge is nothing to sneeze at for hunting or protection. We’re offering the MP22 in the photos for only $ 349.00. Not transferable to civilian residents of California or the District of Colombia. For civilians in jurisdictions where 12 round magazines are restricted, $10 off but no magazine. Don't try, either, to circumvent any law; for example, a California civilian may not buy a high capacity magazine and have it shipped to his brother-in-law in Nevada. That is a felony.
