HG5913 Photo shows an unusual variant of the always-scarce Smith & Wesson K-38 Combat Masterpiece Stainless, numbered model 67, sixth engineering change. Whereas the manufacturer’s SKU on the current production 67-6 is 162802, this one’s SKU is 662802. The difference is its raised, green-and-red fiber optic sights. The 67 has always been adjustable sight format; but where almost all specimens have black blade or white outline windage and elevation adjustable rear sights and integral stepped blade front sight, this one’s rear sight has an intricately constructed double green dot apparatus piggybacked onto its rear sight, and a matching pinned-on black blade mounted red fiber optic front. Construction is all steel, with MIM, Metal-Injected-Molded .312 smooth faced combat trigger and matching .350 semi-target hammer. Frame is magnum type K with smooth surface round butt grip frame, internal lock with two keys, and floating firing pin. Barrel is heavy contour two piece 4 inch. Grips are factory issue Michaels finger groove checkered contour combat. This particular specimen comes in its original box with its fired brass envelope dated from February of 2007, all its papers including a never-executed factory warranty card, and black cable Master lock. Special order number on the box is 1279, and that does not appear useful for dating, we rely on the fired brass case. This 67-6 was never out of Smith & Wesson Corporate Custody until we got it. It is what S&W designates as a demo, probably a rep’s sample. We have not cleaned it, but we will do so at buyer’s request before we ship. As the photos show, it has substantial carbon deposits on the cylinder face and inside the muzzle crown. Carbon deposits on the underside of the frame top strap directly above the barrel’s forcing cone are substantial as well, but we do not detect any significant blast effect to that area; there certainly is no sign of cutting to the top strap. We estimate this revolver was fired between 100 and 200 times during its showpiece interim, and that probably with CCI lead nose or wadcutter ammunition. Surface detractions other than the soot are negligible, only cylinder rotation marking. We rate this 67-6 as Excellent in Box, but photos ought to suffice for our distinguished shoppers to judge finish grade for themselves. It is certainly excellent mechanically, and still under warranty. Double action trigger pull is very smooth and consistent, and the hammer travels an additional 10 degrees after the cylinder times in all six positions on double action. On single action, the hammer travels fully 35 degrees on all six after the cylinder times, and the single action trigger pull is a very crisp original 3 1/4 pounds with no creep. Lateral play to the cylinder is negligible, both with the trigger relaxed and with it fully depressed. Cylinder face to forcing cone gap measures .005. This is a very well constructive, distinctive Smith & Wesson Combat Masterpiece that is eminently serviceable and collectable. Replacement pricing on the 162802 variant is upwards of $700 per unit if a person can even find one. We’re offering this better grade 67-6, however, for only $ 539.00.
