Here is Colt’s smallest 1911 series sub compact, the Defender. Manufacturer is Colt Defense LLC of Hartford, CT. Type is sub compact locked breech semi automatic pistol. Construction is steel barrel, slide, magazine, hammer, trigger, and internal parts all fitted into an Officer or Detonics size alloy grip frame. Finish is brushed stainless slide laterals, matte verticals, matte blued sights and trigger, and coated alloy frame. This specimen comes with a factory installed stainless Smith & Alexander grip safety, in addition to its stock grip safety; and with Hogue Combat wrap around as well as its original Rosewood laminate grips. Barrel is 3 inch Detonics type stainless, six groove left hand 1:10 rifling, no bushing, with slide interfacing locking lugs. Guide Rod is two piece retractable full length. Slide is 5 3/4 inches, with rear lateral serrations, brushed stainless sides and matte vertical. Sights are Trijicon® HS-10 Night sights, dovetailed front and rear. Trigger is .237 serrated face blue steel, and pulls at 3 7/8 pounds with minimal felt creep. Hammer is .290 stainless skeleton Commander type. Mainspring housing is C type serrated gray polymer. Main safety is original low profile, and the Defender also has a firing pin safety. Magazines are both 7 round Officer size bright stainless; the pistol will accept any 1911 magazine with some protrusion. Slide release and main safety are both serrated matte stainless, low profile to preserve the flatness of the pistol. It measures .805 frame thickness, .928 slide thickness, and only 1.126 from the right side of the slide to the crest of the main safety. Magazine release is slightly extended checkered surface, and sits right about the specially ground concave area on the front strap of the frame directly under the trigger guard. That milled feature is small-hand friendly and provides a better grip for any size hand. Weight, after all, is only 22 1/2 ounces empty, half the weight of the original 1911. This Defender comes to us from its exclusive civilian owner in Lenoir County, North Carolina. Surface detractions are minimal, all we see are two short faint marks behind the front sight and under the slide release. We rate it as Excellent in Box, 95 percent vicinity by our estimate, but photos ought to suffice for our distinguished shoppers to judge finish grade for themselves. Bore, chamber, and mechanism are all bright, clean, and excellent. We estimate this pistol has been fired fewer than 200 times. It is in its original box with instruction manual, hang tag, NRA Card, Union Card, cable lock, chamber protector, replacement grip screws and bushings, original trigger and grip safety, and two replacement high visibility magazine followers.
