Remington’s 550 series rimfires were the first to earn the workhorse title for their kind. Production ran from 1941 until 1970; we closed out the ones we had in 1971 at $55 apiece. The 550-2G Gallery Special Variant only saw 8000 some odd units produced, 1% of the entire production of 750000. This is the first one we’ve come across in at least 30 years. From a local West Tennessee collection comes this specimen of Remington’s 550-2G, Gallery Special Rifle. It was never serialized. From its LWW barrel date code, it was manufactured in February 1950, First Year of Production and quite possibly part of the First Production Run. Quite likely this one served gallery duty at the Mid-South Fair in Memphis. Manufacturer was Remington Arms of Ilion, NY. Construction is entirely steel metal, only with a brass inner magazine tube. Stock is one piece American Walnut, plain semi gloss finish on the stock, blue steel on the metal but with white steel bolt. Chambering on this variant is .22 Short only; it lacks the floating chamber of the more common 550 and 550-1 rifles. Barrel is medium 22 inch, tapers from .885 outside diameter at the receiver to .710 at the forend to .620 at the muzzle. Sights are dovetailed beaded blade .350 high front with screw on step elevator steel elevation adjustable rear. Bore is six groove 1:16 right hand twist. Receiver is serrated top, not grooved: scoping a .22 short was just not done much in the 1950s. Receiver is drilled for a deflector, and its screw is intact. Deflectors are readily available throughout the country. Magazine holds 21 rounds of .22 Short caliber ammunition. This rifle will Not operate with .22 Long Rifle or .22 Long ammunition. It was designed to cycle with .22 Short Standard or High Velocity Ammunition, 750 fps to 1100 fps vicinity. It will not cycle .22 CB, will not cycle Fleet’s suppositories. Note that this rifle’s gallery chain ring is intact and original. Buttstock length of pull measures 13 1/2 inches from the .240 wide steel trigger’s serrated face to the end of the factory polymer butt plate. Overall length is 41 1/4 inches. Weight empty is 5 pounds 13 1/2 ounces, with center of gravity at the stock bolt. Surface detractions on this specimen are moderate, principally extensive freckling and toning on the barrel and receiver. We rate it as Very Good, 75 percent vicinity by our estimate, but photos ought to suffice for our distinguished shoppers to judge finish grade for themselves. Bore, chamber, and mechanism are all bright and clean. We have test fired it with 20 rounds of mixed High Velocity Short ammunition with no hitches. A fair amount of lead came out of its bore when we cleaned it, so we estimate it has been fired some 3,000 rounds with mostly standard velocity lead ammunition. We’re offering this rare 2G Gallery Special variant of the Remington 550 for only $ 589.00. Definitely C&R Eligible.
