CONFEDERATE MOUNTED INFANTRY MUSKET ? Guns > Rifles > Muzzleloading Pre-1899 Rifles (perc)

THIS IS A SHORTENED U.S PATTERN 1842 MUSKET. THE U.S MARKINGS ON THE LOCK PLATE AND BUTT PLATE TANG HAVE BEEN ALTERED TO READ S. ONLY, AS IN SOUTHERN OR SECESH ? ALSO, THERE ARE NO ARSENAL INSPECTOR STAMPS ON THE WOOD. IN ADDITION, THERE IS NO PROVISION FOR A REAR SIGHT ON THE BARREL NOR IS THERE A SLING SWIVEL INLET ON THE BUTT STOCK....COULD THIS PIECE HAVE BEEN PUT TOGETHER FROM PARTS CAPTURED AT THE HARPERS FERRY ARMORY IN 1861 OR IN THE BATTLES AROUND RICHMOND IN 1862? LOCK PLATE IS STAMPED HARPERS FERRY 1851. 69 CALIBER, 26" BARREL, WITH LIGHTLY PITTED, BRIGHT SHINY, SMOOTH BORE. RESEARCH REVEALS THAT WEAPONS OF THIS TYPE WERE USED BY CONFEDERATE MOUNTED INFANTRY UNITS, SUCH AS THOSE COMMANDED BY NATHAN BEDFORD FORREST AND OTHERS...YOU COULD SHOOT THIS ONE WITH LIGHT LOADS IF YOU WISH. VERY INTERESTING CIVIL WAR ERA WEAPON.... SEE MURPHY'S BOOK FOR MORE DETAILS. REMOVED LOCK AND FOUND AN A STAMPED IN WOOD. IS THIS THE MARK OF THE AUGUSTA, GEORGIA ARSENAL, WHERE THOUSANDS OF CAPTURED YANKEE GUNS AND PARTS WERE REMADE INTO GOOD SERVICEABLE ARMS FOR THE GLORIOUS CAUSE?
