Description: This is an early second model 1866 rifle shipped from the factory in 1868. The first serial number used on the ’66 was at 12,000, following the Henry’s and from then on, used concurrently, so one can see this was a third year production gun, one of 4189 produced in ’68 (2337 were made in ’66 and only 764 in ’67). The gun has special order sling swivels and a standard 24-inch (actually 24 and 3/8”) barrel. The bore is relatively good with strong rifling and the mechanics are in very good condition – fully functional. The wood is in generally good condition however the butt stock has a crack from side to side at the toe butt plate screw, and it has a non-visible longitudinal split (running with the upper and lower tang) which has been professionally repaired from the inside of the inletting. The forearm appears to have cracks about 1/4 inch down from the top front at the forearm cap running three to five inches toward the receiver. These cracks also appear to have been glued from the inside of the barrel channel. The octagon barrel has the two-die patent stamping, with the Henry patent of Oct. 16, 1860 over the King’s patent of March 29, 1866. The rear sight is a Winchester “Sporting Leaf” sight (the internal spring and plunger are missing) and the front is the “Sporting Front Sight” with steel base and a nickel silver blade (this was later called the “Rocky Mountain front sight). Finally, the lower tang has been broken off at some point and expertly reattached. Judging from the patina on the receiver, it was not done recently. I’ve included pictures of both the outside and inside of the mend. This is an antique - no FFL needed for transfer
