Bid: Time Left: (Ended) Shipping: $55.00 Accepted Payment Methods: Returns: No Returns Description: Up for auction is a somewhat rare Japanese surplus rifle, a Type 99 that they refer to as a "last ditch" version. By "last ditch," they mean end-of-war. And this one certainly fits the description. The story that goes with this rifle is unusual enough to warrant the price of the gun: it starts out with a an army crewman on a C-47 landing on an Japanese airfield outside Tokyo at the end of the war, trying to take charge of a military warehouse guarded by Japanese MP's who didn't know the war was over, and loading several crates of recently completed Type 99's on the plane for evacuation, and one finding its way back to America where it remained in a closet for years. Anyway, there are many more details, but that in essence is the abbreviated story. I don't know how much of that is true, but what I do know is true is that this rifle: 1) was never issued 2) never fired 3) and never stamped with the "mum" of the emperor. So far as I can tell, from the bore, from the bolt head, from the trigger sear, the airmen found a stash of crates of Type 99's made in the last few days of the war. Later, when it was spirited back to the States, the wood and the metal were attended to to preserve them. It's my belief that this rifle was made in the very last days of WW 2. Although this is a fully functional gun, I believe its historic value exceeds its value as a shooter. This might be the rarity that completes your military surplus collection.
