We are offering for sale a Model 1841 US percussion rifle, produced under government contract by the firm of Robbins & Lawrence of Windsor, Vermont.
One of 15,000 such rifles produced between 1848 to 1853, this single-shot, percussion-rifled muzzleloader features a .54 caliber, 33” long round barrel. Lockplate is mottled gray with no case colors and features the markings “ROBBINS / & / LAWRENCE / US” forward of the hammer. Rear of hammer is the two-line stamping “WINDSOR VT / 1851.”
Overall length of the weapon is 48½” and weighs ten pounds. The round barrel measures 33” in length, is fitted with the open rear sight and a brass blade front sight. No bayonet lug. Barrel is very good with scattered surface finish along with scattered rust pitting, especially at the bolster and breech area. No date on the tang but breech does show barrel markings “JCB” and proofmarks “P.” Barrel band and nosecap are not original to the rifle.
The black walnut stock is very good with one small imperfection where the nosecap is attached. The surface shows genuine field wear.Two government cartouches are faintly visible on the flat opposite the hammer. Stock bears scattered dings and dents from use and storage. Brass buttplate features the “US” on the tang and also a rack number “28.” Lock plate and hammer have no case colors remaining but show scattered areas of dark oxidation. Mechanics are strong and crisp. Some screws buggered. Bore rifling is good but suffers from light pitting and surface grime. Steel ramrod is a variation and not the original. Rifle retains trigger guard sling swivel. Ramrod included. A veteran ‘Mississippi’ percussion rifle in good condition overall.
