The XD(M) series is the premium branch of the XD family, boasting a host of performance enhancing features, including better ergonomics, simplified take-down, and improved sights as well as the basic features and natural pointing ability of the basic XD. The XD(M) 3.8 Compact, specifically, is designed from the ground up as a highly versatile carry piece. Measuring just over 1” in wide and only 4 3/4” high with the 13-rd flush fit carry mag, the XD(M)-9 Compact 3.8 is perfect for daily carry. Inserting the 19-rd Extended mag instantly expands the frame to full size for range use and target-grade control. Coupled with dead simple operation, accuracy, durability and a host of safety features, it's a tough package to beat.
The XD(M)-9 Compact 3.8 pistol is a striker-fired, single-action pistol, which superficially appears to operate like a Glock. The XD system, however, fully cocks the action when the slide cycles. Unlike Glock triggers, which must finish cocking the striker, all that is left for the XD trigger to do is to release the striker. As a result, XD triggers break very cleanly, and the pistols are fitted with a 1911-like grip safety to augment the lever built into the trigger to prevent discharge if the gun is dropped. What this means is that XD pistols are very safe, but are dead simple to put into use in a pinch. Just grab firmly and pull the single-action trigger. The XD(M) trigger also has a very short reset for combat efficiency. The pistol has a loaded chamber indicator on top of the slide and ambi mag releases conventionally located behind the trigger. Lock up is similar to Sig P-series pistols, as is disassembly, which can be accomplished in 10 seconds via a lever on the left side of the frame. Unlike Glocks and earlier XD's, the trigger does not have to be stroked to complete disassembly.
This model is finished in Springfield's business like matte black, which mates a reinforced polymer frame to a Melonite-finished forged steel slide. Both slide and frame are highly corrosion resistant, as is the match-grade, black, Melonite-finished 3.8” barrel. A secure hold is ensured by aggressive texturing on the grip, front and back strap, which has 3 interchangeable back straps to “right-size” the gun to any hand size. The dust cover is fitted with a full 3-slot Picatinny accessory rail. The bodies of the 2 Springfield Armory magazines are bright stainless steel. The 13-round magazine is flush-fit to the existing grip for discreet carry. The 19-round magazine has a 1-inch high “X-Tension” sleeve which is blended with and extends the grip to a full 5 ¾ inches. 3-dot, low-profile sights are dovetailed into the slide both front and rear and drift adjustable for windage. The front site is a bright red fiber optic unit and the rear notch is wide for rapid combat target acquisition. The rear sight is mounted as far back as possible to maximize sight radius and practical accuracy. Don't pass up this highly versatile carry package!
