Here is a specimen of the most popular, best-selling firearm of all time, at least in our experience: the good used .410 single shot. This is a fully traditional New England Firearms model SB-1, virtually identical to the H&R 088 Topper. NEF typically designates this variant as a Youth Model. Barrel is inceed 22 inch .405 diameter full choke, 3 inch chamber, blue steel. In traditional measurement, the .405 diameter is more like Modified than it is Full, so this shotgun will handle slugs and buckshot well. Buttstock measures 13 1/2 inches from the trigger face to the end of the butt plate, not a youth length by any stretch of our imagination. Buttstock is canted to the right about 1 inch, and even though a left handed shooter can reach his or her thumb over the hammer to operate the breech lever, this is not a Southpaw Friendly shotgun. Receiver is traditional H&R casehardened. Metal finish is strong and original throughout, but with faint amounts of spotty superficial toning on the barrel surfaces, not readily conspicuous. Wood scouring is minimal, only a little on the right side of the buttstock. We rate this NEF .410 Pardner as Very Good, perhaps even Excellent, since 85 to 90 percent of its finish is unaffected by any use evidence. Bore, chamber, and mechanism are all bright, clean, and excellent. Date code serial number prefix is NS, manufactured in 2002. This is a local shotgun, its owner was not really a hunter, and we estimate it has been fired fewer than 50 times. Replacement pricing on these shotguns is presently $200 apiece or more.
