Relevant portion of the date code on this solid, well-preserved Remington 742 Woodsmaster is OZ, July of 1975. That is the period of time when Mr. Wayne Webster of Bolivar, Tennessee, long-time proprietor of Webster’s Sporting Goods, attempted to teach our present proprietor a few things about guns and people. One of the things we distinctly remember is Wayne’s lesson on how to tell whether a 742 is still good, by looking at the bolt guide rails inside the receiver. If they are chewed up, beware; the rifle is only good for parts. But one like this, with the rails smooth and intact – as the photos show – is in good mechanical condition, viable, serviceable, and shootable. We have cleaned and test fired this rifle, and it is flawless mechanically. This is a local one-owner from one of the Hensley family now-elders from McNairy County. It has been well maintained and shows relatively little surface wear from its long but sparing-use career in the woods around Finger and Leapwood, Tennessee. We rate it as Very Good finishwise, with 75 to 80 percent of the original finish remaining. The muzzle area shows moderate wear, as the photos show; the magazine has some rust residue on its bottom area; and there are some pecks and scuffs on the upper left side of the receiver, as the photos show. There are no serious detractions in the walnut beyond a light edge chip on the rear left lower edge of the forend, and that chip is small and does not penetrate all the way through to the metal. This rifle still has period 1970s narrow-aperture Kwik Site mounts installed, and all it needs to be period correct is an older Japanese-made Tasco or Bushnell 3x9 scope. Bore and mechanism are excellent. Own this good, solid old Remington, capable of many years of hunting service so long as its owner takes as good care of it as our Hensley cousins for only $ 339.95
