All of us know Hogue from their popular, good-feeling, good-pointing soft rubber grips that have been around now for over 2 decades. There’s more to Hogue than just injection-molded rubber, though. Here is the closest Hogue ever produced to the classic old Smith & Wesson factory Combat Finger-Groove Grips for K and L frame Round Butt revolvers. Revolvers include models 10, 13, 19, 64, 65, 66, 67, 686, any of them with Round Butt Grip frame. Almost all of these models made since about 1995 are Round Butt. We called the old ones Banana grips here in the South, but some of us are sophisticated enough to pronounce Goncalo Alves, after reading it for 50 years. Hogue assets its artistry in their factory snippet of an essay: Hardwood grips are precision inlet on modern computerized machinery (CNC) then hand finished on actual factory frames, assuring a proper fit. Finally they are hand polished to a non slippery sheen using natural carnauba wax which will not crack and peel like cheap sprayed on finishes. We hope that isn’t a dig against our beloved old factory grips from the 1970s that inspired these. At any rate, these are thoroughly traditional looking grips, and they have a feel and pointability that is even better than the originals. We no longer find these in the distribution channels or on Hogue’s home pages. Photos show both factory specimens and stock specimens we had in our store.
