From the collection of our favorite Kansas Lawman comes this serviceable and original specimen of the Colt Woodsman .22 Target Pistol. From its 33700 range, S suffix serial number, this one was manufactured in 1949, which was really the first year of full production of the series that was haltingly begun in 1948. Surface detractions are extensive. Very little original bluing remains. Surface is mostly brown and gun metal gray. We estimate that 30 percent of the surface has superficial pitting. Finish grade, then, will only go Fair to Good, but photos ought to suffice for our shoppers to judge that for themselves. Lettering on the left side of the slide, barrel and frame are strong. Left side barrel lettering could be gone around pretty well for refinishing. The model and Rampant Colt image will need to be buffed, however, and the same holds true from the left side slide marking. Serial number is very strong and deep on the right side. Note the two pronounced nicks on the sides of the muzzle area. We simply point these things out because many shoppers want to consider these aspects if they plan to refinish this pistol. Despite its surface condition, this Woodsman is Excellent mechanically. Bore, chamber, and mechanism are all bright, clean, and excellent with no bore or chamber pits whatsoever. After all, the Woodsman was designed as a fishing, hunting, and trapping companion and that is where this one has been, in the upland areas of Southeast Kansas and the Missouri Ozarks. The bakelite grips are original, excellent, and flat as they should be. Note the windage and elevation adjustable rear sight with matching pinned-blade front sight. As far as specs, manufacturer is Colt’s Patent Firearms Manufacturing Company of Hartford, Connecticut; type is semi-automatic blowback action pistol with internall hammer; construction is entirely steel, with right hand shooter safety; barrel is 4 1/2 inch Medium; trigger is serrated face steel; magazine is blue steel 10 shot original Colt Factory; caliber .22 Long Rifle High Velocity (not for hyper velocity Stingers, etc.); weight empty is 31 ounces.
