Introduced in 1939, the Winchester model 74 Self Loading Rifle is perhaps best known as a Gallery piece. During World War II, a good many of these served in the British Army as trainers, and some were even outfitted with suppressors for infiltration rifles. From this specimen’s 131000 range serial number, it was manufactured in 1946. It comes to us from the Estate of a local police officer. This one has served as a harvesting device for squirrels, raccoons, and rabbits here in the West Tennessee Forked Deer and Hatchie River basins. Specs are semi automatic blowback action rimfire rifle. Barrel is 24 inch with 1:16 right hand twist. Sights are brass beaded steel dovetailed blade front and dovetailed step elevator steel rear. Manufacturer was Winchester Olin of New Haven CT. Construction is entirely blued steel. Caliber is .22 Long Rifle only, and the magazine tube is inside the buttstock, and capacity is 14+1 rounds. Finish is blue steel with oil finished walnut buttstock. Length of pull is 13 1/2 inches from the trigger face to the end of the buttstock, and overall length 43 3/4 inches. Weight empty is 6 pounds 5 ounces with center of gravity beneath the bolt. Surface detractions on this 74 are moderate, principally freckling on the barrel and receiver, with only small amounts that are etchy near the forend tip and on the rear area of the receiver. Buttstock has moderate finish scouring on the sides; both buttstock and steel, however, show fairly strong original finish. We rate this 74 as Very Good, 75 to 80 percent vicinity by our estimate. Photos, at any rate, ought to suffice for our distinguished shoppers to judge finish grade for themselves. It is excellent mechanically; bore, chamber, and mechanism are all bright, clean, and excellent. We’re offering this attractive, serviceable and collectable Winchester 74 .22 Long Rifle for only $ 339.00.
