Star, Bonifacio Echeverria S.A. of Eibar, Spain quickly caught the attention of Europe, the Middle East, and even the United States with their excellent quality pistols that went into production in 1934 with the Star Model A. The Star’s all steel, close machined construction certainly was strong enough to stand the high pressures from the 38 Super Round, and it most certainly could withstand any 9mm Luger Rounds. Here is a well preserved specimen of the 9mm descendant Star Model B S with Israeli proof marks, the encircled MW characters on the right side of the frame above the trigger guard junction. Spanish proofs on the grip frame under the left panel include date code P 1, manufactured in 1971. The S suffix to the model number indicates the presence of a magazine safety; that is, this pistol will not fire with the magazine removed. This Star BS comes to us from service with the Mishteret Y’Israel, the Israeli Civilian Police in Jerusalem District, and before that from service with the Israel Defense Forces. This pistol was on duty, then, during the 1973 Yom Kippur War. This variant was manufactured from 1957 until 1983; and from its 1,100,000 serial number range we estimate it was manufactured in about 1971 or 1972. Its only alien stamping is required by US Law, PW Arms Redmond WA importer marks on the forward upper left side of its frame. Barrel and slide are 5 inch Colt Government length, blue steel with John M. Browning bushing type mechanism. Sights are stake-on half moon low profile front and matching dovetailed blue steel rear combat type. Extractor is housed completely internally to the slide, located in right rear serrated area, as the photos show. Safety setup is main safety only for cocked-and-locked carry, with no grip safety. The Star safety, however, will engage with the hammer in resting position. Frame’s mainspring housing area is integral to the frame, not removable, with checkered serrations. Magazine is factory Star Interarms, made a bit later than the pistol itself. Capacity is 8 rounds, 8 + 1, and magazines are available throughout the country. Caliber is 9mm parabellum, 9mm Luger, 9x19, call it what you will, THE 9mm. Weight empty is 37 ounces, and weight and dimensions are very similar to the Colt 1911 Government Pistols. Grip panels are checkered Brown composite factory issue with moderate flattening to the checkering crowns. On this specimen, Surface detractions are only moderate: faint edge whitening, with occasional superficial brown freckling, mostly visible on the never-blued chamber area of the barrel’s outside surface visible through the slide’s ejection port and on the never-blued sides of the serrated service trigger. We rate this specimen as Very Good, close to Excellent, 85 percent vicinity by our estimate; photos, at any rate, ought to suffice for our distinguished shoppers to judge finish grade for themselves. It is excellent mechanically; bore, chamber, and mechanism are all bright, clean and excellent, and the trigger pull is crisp 5 pound vicinity with negligible felt creep.
