The Smith & Wesson .38 M&P Stainless has always been one of the most plentiful revolvers on the market in its standard 4 inch Heavy Barrel configuration. That is not true about the 2 inch Round Butt Grip Frame variant. Two inch Model 64s have historically held their value and appreciated considerably over the years, due to the comparatively sparse number of them ever issued to begin with. Here is a real find, as far as we are concerned; a Smith & Wesson numbered model 64, Second Engineering Change / 64-2, manufactured 1979 from its 1D55000 range serial number. This revolver served and protected our fellow citizens in California with the California Department of Corrections, beginning during the Presidential tenure of Californian Richard M. Nixon. CDC prefix number is neatly roll stamped on the left side of the frame between the trigger and the cylinder. It is what we call a Pinned Barrel variant from the Bangor Punta period of Smith & Wesson corporate ownership; a rivet pin secures the barrel into the frame as the photos show. Specs on this revolver are traditional double and single action; caliber .38 Special and rated for +P loads; 2 inch heavy barrel; entire stainless steel construction with satin stainless .265 service hammer and matching .265 serrated face service trigger. Sights are fixed notch rear and serrated ramp front sight with wide rib on the heavy barrel. Frame type is K, medium frame with round butt smooth surface grip frame. Grips are original issue factory S&W Goncalo Magna type service grips. Weight empty is 28 ounces. Its weight and balance with center of gravity at the trigger make it one of the most pleasant and user friendly firearms ever. This specimen shows only moderate surface detractions: holster buffing at places on its surface; small amounts of scouring on the lower edges, with two or three key tiny contact pecks on the left side of the frame near the thumb latch. We rate it as Very Good finishwise, 80 to 85 percent vicinity by our estimate; but photos ought to suffice for our distinguished shoppers to judge finish grade for themselves. It is excellent mechanically. Few +P rounds have been fired in this revolver, attest the negligible blast effect to the under side of the frame top strap, only a shallow etchy streak that extends about 3/4 of the way across the top strap. Bore, chamber, and mechanism are all bright, clean, and excellent. Double action trigger pull is smooth and consistent, and the cylinder times correctly in all six positions on both single and double action. The single action trigger pull is a crisp original 3 - 15/16 pounds. Cylinder face to forcing cone gap is a very tight .003. Lateral play to the cylinder is negligible, both with the trigger relaxed and with it fully depressed.
