Ruger came a little late to the polymer framed handgun market, but they got it right. This is the latest variant of Ruger’s SR-9 platform, the 9E. Manufacturer and warrantor is Sturm, Ruger & Co., Prescott Arizona plant. Ruger saved time and money in the manufacturing of this model by changing four main things. The slide finish is a black oxide type instead of nitride. The rear slide serrations are wider than the SR9s which takes less time to do.. Instead of a loaded chamber indicator, the top of the barrel has a visual port to see if there is one in the chamber. Instead of shipping with two magazines, Ruger sent these out with one. Type is striker fired semi automatic pistol. Construction is steel alloy slide and stainless barrel, and steel internal parts assembled into a glass filled, steel reinforced polymer frame. Chambering is 9mm Luger, 9mm Parabellum, 9x19, call it what you will, THE 9mm. Unlike its chief competitor Glock 19, the Ruger follows its heritage and will fire any ammunition from steel case Russian to lead bullet reloads to +P Cor-bons. Barrel is 4.14 inch stainless, right hand six groove 1:10 conventional rifling. Slide is black oxide finish with lateral rear serrations. Sight system is dovetailed front and rear; dot front with low profile combat rear that is windage adjustable only. Frame incorporates a single slot picatinny rail system for light mounting; and its mainspring housing / backstrap is reversible to change the grip contour. This pistol comes with one factory 17 round magazine. Safety system is low profile ambidextrous frame mounted lever type, with a much lower profile than its only competitor, Smith & Wesson’s M&P 9 safety variant. Extractor doubles as a loaded chamber indicator, and the trigger bar lock, Firing pin safety, and trigger safety round out the safety system. Trigger is .350 polymer with center lever, pulls at a smooth 5 pound vicinity with 1 inch of travel. The SR9 pistol, writes the Factory, weighs in at 27.2 oz. and features an overall length of 7.5 inches, a height of 5.5 inches, and slim 1.27 inch grip width (across safety levers).
