Winchester High Wall - Vickery Conversion - 220 Swift
Truly a “one-of-a-kind rifle. I’m old enough to remember my Dad corresponding back and forth with W.F. Vickery in Boise Idaho, starting in 1948, about converting his High Wall to 220 Swift. You younger guys may not know who Vickery is. Google the name, or better still, the title of his book “Advanced Gunsmithing”.
Vickery installed a 26” Ackley 6 groove barrel, chambered for the 220 Swift Cartridge, modified the lower tang for a pistol grip stock, mounted the Fecker scope blocks, and completed all metal work on the early Winchester, including re-bluing. My Dad, an expert gunsmith in his own right, restocked the rifle.
I’m not sure what power the J.W. Fecker scope is. My guess would be 10 power. The optics and crosshairs are clear in the 22.5” scope. It has both screw-on lens caps. If anyone can enlighten me with more information on this scope I’ll be glad to post your comments. Might note the inletted "S" on the stock. Dad, in later years, mentioned he wished he had not personalized the rifle in this way. I view it kinda like the guy that visited the tatoo shop. At the time it seemed the right thing to do.
Dad kept all of his letters from Vickery during the several months the work was progressing on the rifle. He also had an original copy of Vickery’s book, kept handy in his workshop. It has been out of print for many years, and is now a collector’s item. The letters and book will go with the rifle.
The rifle has been in storage for more than 50 years. It has been well cared for and the condition is excellent. Their are a few small specks of rust on the scope tube. I have no idea what this rifle is worth, because there is nothing I can find to compare it with. Will try for $1600. If it sells quick I’ll know I priced it too low. If there is no interest after a few weeks I’ll consider lowering the price at that time.
More pictures are available. I can also scan a couple of the 60 year old Vickery letters so you may verify my comments and see for yourself what makes this rifle so interesting.
Please Note *** I am not a dealer and I will not ship this rifle through the mail. I guess I’m just getting too old to mess with properly packing it for shipping – and going through the hassle of finding a dealer to handle it. If you want to buy it, or make an offer – and you are located anywhere in the central part of the Country contact me. My wife and I are retired and we often travel. Our location is SE Oklahoma zip 74953. I’ll make every effort, if within a reasonable time frame and reasonable distance, to bring the rifle to you, or perhaps meet half way. East or West Coast folks are out, unless you have someone closer to act as your agent, to inspect the rifle and scope and close the deal. Buyers will have full, no obligation, inspection privileges.
