Winchester Model 21 DELUXE DUCK - CUSTOM SHOP, 32", 3" MAG
The Model 21 Duck is a highly sought after Winchester, especially with 32" barrels. Shipped standard with pad and 3" chambers, it was meticulously chambered, bored, and choked to provide deadly patterns at long ranges. Add the "Deluxe" features and you truly have a treasure, as the Deluxe Duck was standard with highly figured wood, built to the customers specs, all internal parts were hand polished to provide the finest double shotgun possible, with brutish strength to handle even the stoutest Magnum loads. There were just a handful of Deluxe Ducks ever produced, and this one, sn30722 built after 1960, is more special yet! I have researched this ONE-OF-A-KIND Model 21 and carefully looked at all the details. First let me say that there is no record at Cody of how this gun was shipped. Any avid Model 21 fan knows that the records were loosely kept on open shelves in the production area of the factory and many, many records were lost or so soiled as to be illegible. I did ask about the surrounding records and it shows that sn30721 was a Custom Field 12ga., 30" made in 1957, sn 30723 was a Custom Shop Field 12ga. w/30" barrels made in 1970, sn30724 records lost, and sn30725 was a Custom Field 12ga. made in 1967. As all surrounding numbers were built as Custom Shop 12 gauge guns, it is reasonable to assume this gun was a Custom Shop gun as well. The gun has all "Deluxe Duck" features, including Deluxe wood and checkering, engine turned barrel flats, breech face, and watertable, barrels built to near identical dimensions, all Deluxe features. The receiver is a post-1960 TRUE FLATSIDE, and the metal finishes are consistent with post 1960 guns. What a great, well balanced Model 21 with rare features and in FACTORY, NEAR NEW CONDITION.
The 32" barrels retain 99% factory blue, choked F/F (.040/.038), internal bore diameter of .730/.729, minimum barrel wall thickness 31 thou right, 30 thou left, no scratches or dents, 3" factory chambers, ribs tight, barrels tight on breech face and hinge, jeweled barrel flats, clear lettering, a perfect set of barrels.
The action is stamped "Deluxe Duck", lever centered, crisp single selective trigger breaking at 4.5lbs./5lbs. right/left, trigger guard retains 99% blue, perfect screws, strong well timed ejectors, all in perfect mechanical condition.
The well figured wood is oil finish with finish added over the last 50 years, Deluxe checkering pattern like new, English style stock 14" LOP to factory pad from a rear trigger position, 2 1/4" drop at heel, 1 3/8" drop at comb, neutral cast for excellent shooting dimensions, no cracks or repairs, superb wood to metal fit.
This gun is nimble in hand; perfectly balanced and weighing 7lbs. 13oz. . What a deadly late season pheasant gun, long range waterfowler, or turkey killer. Many consider the long barreled Model 21 the very best for vintage sporting clays with spreader loads for the closer shots. The weight is not too much for walking the fields, but just enough to reduce felt recoil and keep your gun swinging on those crossing shots. Certainly a Winchester collectible that can be shot often and still continue to go up in value. It is unlikely you will ever see another like this one with fine English stock, the true, post-1960 milled flat side combining to create a very long, lean looking gun. GORGEOUS!
