Description: This listing is for the exact shotgun in the photos. Note that it does not have any butt plate or recoil pad, and Franchis emphatically need recoil pads. Here is the all time winner in the lightweight autoloader contest, the Franchi 48AL shotgun. This one comes to us from its hunting days in the European Countryside. From its XXIII date code, it was manufactured in 1967. Manufacturer was Luigi Franchi, s.p.a., of Brescia, Italy. It is import stamped on its barrel’s under side by Century Arms. Chambering is 12 gauge, 2 3/4 inch shells only, and it won’t take a rocket scientist to figure out they need to be field load shells. That is because the action is Browning design recoil operated, with friction ring equipped magazine tube assembly. Construction is steel barrel, bolt, and internal parts all assembled into a lightweight alloy receiver group. Barrel is 27 1/2 inch, nominally 28 inch with .7025 muzzle diameter Modified fixed choke, wide enough to accommodate steel shot. Sight is welded steel bead blade front, with serrated receiver groove rear. Magazine tube holds 4 rounds of 2 3/4 inch 12 gauge shotshells, so 4 + 1 fully loaded capacity with no magazine adapter or plug. Mag spring retention is by a Remington type friction split ring retainer. Safety is guard mounted push button type, behind the .235 smooth faced steel trigger. Buttstock and forend are plain oil finish hardwood, fluted forend and pistol grip type buttstock. Note the factory 1 inch permanent sling swivels on the mag cap and buttstock. Stock drop is the standard 1 1/2 x 2 1/2 inch, with a 13 7/8 inch length of pull from the trigger face to the end of the stock: a recoil pad could add up to 2 inches to that. Metal finish is blued steel and black anodized alloy. Surface detractions are moderate. Buttstock has a 1 inch recoil crack on the under side pistol grip that we have glassed and bedded. Wood has extensive contact scouring. Metal has strong original finish, but with extensive freckling and edge wear. We rate this Franchi as Good, 70 percent vicinity by our estimate, but photos ought to suffice for our distinguished shoppers to judge finish grade for themselves. Bore, chamber, and mechanism are all bright and clean. We estimate this shotgun has been fired 1,000 times, primarily with S&B Field Load shells. Replacement pricing on a 48AL is $1,000 on franchiusa com, and it is only available new in small gauges. We estimate a professionally installed recoil pad at $60 vicinity doctor bill. We’re offering the 1967 model 48AL in the photos, then, for only $339.00. Definitely C&R Eligible. A red rubber recoil pad would be period correct, or just a butt plate for real men.
