Star, Bonifacio Echeverria S.A. of Eibar, Spain quickly caught the attention of Europe, the Middle East, and even the United States with their excellent quality pistols that went into production in 1934. Israel’s Defense Forces, among many others, adopted as many Stars as they could get when the move for Independence culminated in the 1948 War. Here is a specimen of Star’s Model B Super, introduced in 1946 and in production until 1983. This pistol served with the Mishteret Y’Israel, the Israeli civilian Police in Jerusalem District. From its T 1 date code, it was manufactured in 1975. Its only alien stamping is from its Washington Importer on the forward left side of the frame. Barrel and slide are 5 1/8 inch Colt Government length, blue steel with Tokarev type bushing setup. Sights are stake-on half moon low profile front and matching dovetailed blue steel rear combat type. Extractor body is visible externally. Safety setup is main safety only for cocked-and-locked carry, with no grip safety. The Star safety, however, will engage with the hammer in resting and half cocked position. It is Series 70 style, no firing pin block, but it may or may not have a magazine safety. Frame’s mainspring housing area is integral to the frame, not removable, with checkered serrations. The real innovation to the B Super, visible on the right side, is its rapid field-stripping capability. It achieved this by means of a closed cam path in lieu of the classic 1911 barrel link setup. This B Super has a loaded chamber indicator on the top rear of the barrel’s chamber hood area. Magazine is blue steel factory Star. Capacity is 9 rounds, 8 + 1, and magazines are available throughout the country. Caliber is 9mm Parabellum, 9mm Luger, 9x19, call it what you will, THE 9mm. Weight empty is 37.2 ounces, and weight and dimensions are very similar to the Colt 1911 Government Pistols. Grip panels are checkered Brown composite factory issue with minimal flattening to the checkering crowns of the right panel. On this specimen, Surface detractions are principally finish loss to, and brown toning on, the slide sides. Grip frame front and back straps exhibit less conspicuous wear. We rate this B Super as only Good, 65 percent vicinity by our estimate; photos, at any rate, ought to suffice for our distinguished shoppers to judge finish grade for themselves. Other than the bend, it is excellent mechanically; bore, chamber, and mechanism are all bright, clean and excellent, and the trigger pull is a tight 8 pound vicinity, but with negligible felt creep.
