Introduced in 1991 by FN Herstal for use in their P90 PDW, the 5.7x28mm cartridge is very compact which allows for improved magazine capacity. The cartridge itself has a light bullet that travels at very high velocity. This makes it effective against most body armor. FN restricts the sale of this for the Military and Law Enforcement, this is the reason there is such a limited supply to the general public
