The OMC Backup made its debut in the Early Reagan Years, and the tooling was quickly purchased by Arcadia Machine Tool, first operating in Irwindale, then in Covina, California. The original company went belly up in 1998. The OMC, later AMT, Backup deserves credit for being the grandfather of all truly compact .380 Automatics. This specimen of the AMT Backup was manufactured in 1987, from its similarly serialized siblings we bought new that year, B176xx. Letter B prefix serialization began sometime around midyear 1987. Type is single action only, blowback, striker fired semi automatic pocket pistol with main safety and grip safety. Construction is entirely stainless steel metal, but with matte blue trigger and black checkered polymer grip panels. Barrel is 2 5/8 inch, eight groove right hand 1:16 rifling, with throated feed ramp. Slide is serrated rear, brushed laterals and recessed serrated breech face area that houses the top ejection extractor. Guide Rod is full length steel. Sights are recessed groove, with low frame integral blade front and fixed notch rear. Main safety is two position left side, for a right handed shooter; and with grip safety on the back strap of the steel frame. Trigger is .200 smooth face, and pulls at 6 7/8 pounds with minimal felt creep. Magazine is original steel finger rest type, holds 6 rounds of .380 ACP caliber ammunition, so 6+1 fully loaded capacity. Weight empty is 17.4 ounces, with center of gravity at the main safety. Overall length is 5 inches from the muzzle to the rear edge of the grip frame; height is 4 inches including the finger rest; and slide thickness measures .790. Finish is brushed stainless slide laterals, with matte stainless elsewhere. This AMT comes to us from one of our South Mississippi friends. Surface detractions are only moderate, just holster and pocket buffing to the rough matte surfaces on top of the slide, and on its edges. We rate it as Very Good, close to excellent, 85 percent vicinity; photos, however, ought to suffice for our distinguished shoppers to judge finish grade for themselves. Bore, chamber, and mechanism are all bright and clean. The Backups, like most other autos of the period, were not designed to digest sharp nosed hollowpoints; with a .380 pistol, hollowpoints defeat the purpose anyway, that purpose being the need for penetration in defensive situations. We have test fired it with 12 rounds of PMC .380 FMC and no hitches. This pistol comes with a slick, custom made South Mississippi leather pocket filler type holster dated from 1995.
