From the estate of a distinguished Memphis Firefighter comes this attractive early Thompson Center Renegade percussion rifle chambered in .54 Black Powder caliber. There is a lot of incorrect information on the ‘net, of course; we remember personally shipping Renegades in substantial numbers in the early 1980s. This one’s serial number is 116000 range, a very early specimen. Dates on its date coded Italian mates were early 1970s from this collection. We estimate this T/C was manufactured in the early 1980s, perhaps late 1970s. This Renegade is very early, possibly a First Year of Production specimen. Sadly, none of us kept records on our muzzleloaders from back then. Stock is genuine American Walnut, and barrels is classic 26 inch Thompson / Center Renegade octagonal, 1 inch across the flats. Caliber, of course, is .54 with the versatile 1:48 right hand twist that is accurate with all forms of bullets, sabots, maxi-balls, or even patched round balls. This rifle has a suede backed leather imported sling, circa 1980s, with Uncle Mike’s swivels and studs. Ramrod is Fiberglass replacement. Finish only has moderate handling wear; principally freckling concentrated near the nipple area. Otherwise, bluing, casehardening to the hammer and double set triggers, and semi-gloss finish to the walnut stock are strong throughout. Stock has a moderate amount of scouring and light pecking, but no cracks whatsoever. We rate this Renegade as Very Good finishwise, 80 percent vicinity by our estimate. Photos, at any rate, should suffice for prospective owners to judge finish grade for themselves.. In the bore, upon very close inspection with our trusty bore prism, we do not detect any pitting. When we got it, we cleaned a substantial amount of Pyrodex residue from the bore. We rate this one as Excellent mechanically. The Renegades, sadly, are discontinued, and replacement pricing on a new Hawken is upwards of $600.00. We're offering this attractive, serviceable .54 Renegade with double set triggers for only $ 439.00.
