Imported from Croatia by Springfield Armory and blending design features of the venerable 1911A1, Glock, and Sig, the XD ("Xtreme Duty") series of pistols has built an enviable reputation over the past few years. Beyond its great mix of design features and reasonable cost, the XD has proven to be a natural pointer. Close your eyes and point it at the target and your sight picture will likely be dead on. That's more than Springfield Armory's opinion too. No less an authority than Gun Tests magazine has said, "In our opinion, the XD pistol boasts perhaps the best ergonomics of any pistol outside the single-column 1911". Redesigned from the ground up from the original XD as a compact carry piece measuring less than 1” in width, the XD-S 45 is remarkable for its combination of reliability and slimness, but excellent control when shooting full power .45 ACP loads. Coupled with dead simple operation, accuracy, durability and a host of safety features, it's a tough package to beat. The XD-S 45 pistol is a striker-fired, single-action pistol, which superficially appears to operate like a Glock. The XD system, however, fully cocks the action when the slide cycles. Unlike Glock triggers, which must finish cocking the striker, all that is left for the XD trigger to do is to release the striker. As a result, XD triggers break very cleanly, and the pistols are fitted with a 1911-like grip safety to augment the lever built into the trigger to prevent discharge if the gun is dropped. What this means is XD pistols are very safe, but are dead simple to put into use in a pinch. Just grab firmly and pull the single-action trigger. The XD-S trigger alos has a very short reset for combat efficiency. The pistol also has a loaded chamber indicator on top of the slide and a mag release conventionally located behind the trigger. Lock up is similar to Sig P-series pistols, as is disassembly, which can be accomplished in 10 seconds via a lever on the left side of the frame. As a safety enhancement over the original XD, the XD-S cannot be disassembled with a mag in the weapon.
This model is finished in Springfield's business like matte black, which mates a black carbon and stainless steel reinforced polymer frame with matte black carbon steel slide. Both slide and frame are corrosion resistant and durable. The 3.3" barrel likewise bears a black, durable "melonite" finish. A secure grip is guaranteed by deep stippling on the grip, front and back strap, which is replaceable with a thinner unit (included) for those with smaller hands. The dust cover is fitted with a short Picatinny accessory rail. The bodies of the 2 Springfield Armory 5-round magazines are bright stainless steel. 3-dot, low-profile sights are dovetailed into the slide both front and rear. The front site is a bright red fiber optic unit and the rear notch is fairly wide for rapid combat target acquisition. The XD Gear package consists of speed holster, dual mag pouch, and extra red and green light pipes, all fitted into the molded case.
