Fifty years ago, we had this specimen’s mates hanging from our ceiling, selling them for $12 apiece. We got them at the time from old Mr. Walter Craig of Selma, Alabama. Mr. Walter has now gone on, but his rifles and some of their mates occasionally trickle in. From a young collector here in West Tennessee comes the best looking specimen of the Swiss Vetterli model of 1869 Rifle we ever remember having. Bluing is quite strong throughout, and overrules the brown patina portions 3 to 1 by our estimae. Stock and forend scouring is only moderate; and not the original web pattern checkering on the back area of the forend. We rate it as Very Good finishwise, but photos ought to suffice for our distinguished shoppers to judge finish grade for themselves. Designed and ordered in 1866, the Vetterli, named after its designer, was the most advanced rifle of its day. It was an 11 Shot, bolt action repeater that used a tubular magazine and fired a powerful tapered case .41 caliber cartridge. Since it was a black powder cartridge, this specimen has about 30 percent moderate pitting in its bore, mostly at the back areas. Rifling is strong and sharp toward the muzzle.
