This rifle, S/N 6537, is a very nice example of the less than 300 of its type made by Remington. Designed to compete at 800, 900, and 1000 yards, most were made from 1874 through 1878, although the company listed them for the next few years. Of course, most have since been butchered or were converted to "varmint rifles" in the 1920's and 30's. Part octagon 34" barrel in caliber "44S" (44-77 loaded with 90 grains of powder and the bullet seated further out). This is the "Grade A" with checkered pistol grip stock and plain forearm, fitted with the original tall long range rear vernier tang sight and spirit level windgage front sight. The front sight base is numbered to match the handfitted movable hooded slide. Three members of the American team, Bodine, Fulton, and Hepburn, used these rifles to win the first Creedmoor match in 1874, the other three using Sharps. This particular rifle was probably made in 1876.
