From light civilian use in Northwest Illinois comes this pristine specimen of the .38 Centennial Airweight Stainless, numbered model 642-1. Manufacturer is Smith & Wesson of Springfield, Massachusetts. Construction is stainless steel barrel, cylinder assembly, and thumb latch fitted into an coated white alloy frame with case colored MIM steel .315 smooth faced trigger and completely enclosed internal hammer. Type is double action only pocket revolver. Double action only means that the trigger pull is a consistent 10 pound vicinity pull with 3/4 inch travel to fire the revolver. It cannot be cocked and fired with a light single action trigger pull like its exposed hammer production mate Chief’s Special variants. The hammer cannot snag, and a frightened operator cannot fire without a deliberate pull of the trigger. Safety system is internal transfer bar that does not allow the hammer to strike the firing pin unless the trigger is fully depressed. Chambering is 5 rounds of .38 Smith & Wesson Special caliber ammunition, interchangeable between standard velocity loads and +P high performance ammunition. Barrel is 1 7/8 inch, nominally 2 inch, with integral serrated blade front sight to match the frame integral fixed notch rear sight. Bore is six groove right hand 1:16 rifling. Grips are current production factory short rubber boot grip type. Overall length is 6 5/16 inches from the muzzle to the back of the grip frame; height 4 1/4 inches from the frame top to the grip frame butt; and with a cylinder thickness of 1.310 inches. Weight empty is 15 ounces, with center of gravity at the rear cylinder face. This specimen is in its orginal blue factory cardboard box with its red cable lock, all its papers, including a never executed factory registration card and fired brass envelope dated from March of 2014. Surface detractions are minimal, only faint amounts of cylinder rotation marking and faint carbon deposits on the cylinder face and top strap above the barrel’s forcing cone. We estimate it has been fired fewer than 50 times. We rate it as Excellent, perhaps Near Mint in Box, but photos ought to suffice for our distinguished shoppers to judge finish grade for themselves.
