The SP101 was introduced in 1989 as a compact alternative to the company's full-size GP-100, which is a major player in the .357 Magnum market. Built on a uniquely beefy small frame and borrowing elements of its lock-up design from Ruger's massive .44 Redhawk, the SP101 is one of the toughest small-framed DA/SA revolvers in existence. Rugged, reliable, and dependable, these guns were designed to fit the needs of shooters who are looking for a carry gun more substantial and easier to shoot than the tiny, hard-kicking Chief's Special snubbies marketed by S&W and others. All SP101 revolvers are carefully crafted for combat balance, consistent feel, and accuracy. They are extremely easy to control and comfortable to shoot. This particular specimen has the optional 3 1/16" barrel, which offers perhaps the ideal compromise between control, power, and compactness. The additional inch of barrel on this version over the radical “snub noses”, which are extremely hard to shoot well or comfortably in any caliber, vastly diminishes painful recoil problems, encourages practice, and makes the gun just about perfect for everyone, including women or others with smaller hands. In my experience, this is the absolutely best format for a small revolver in a serious self-defense caliber.
Built on Ruger's small frame, this specimen has Ruger's trademark “Satin Stainless” finish on all surfaces and controls except the matte trigger. The no-snag fixed sights consist of a front, low-profile, blackened blade and a rear grooved notch milled into the top strap. The trigger face is wide, smooth and polished, which aids in control during deliberate fire. Takedown to the major sub-assembly level is easy, allowing hassle free and thorough maintenance. All SP101 revolvers feature a transfer-bar safety system and ultra-strong triple cylinder lock up (frame front, cylinder rear & bottom), a feature typically limited to .44 and bigger bore revolvers by other manufacturers. The black cushioned rubber monogrip with synthetic insert has no exposed metal on the backstrap, making it extremely comfortable with full power loads. The grip also makes this gun an outstanding fit for those with smaller hands. This gun feels great, and is a natural pointer. Outstanding classic!
